Description

EPYC core counts and seven PCIe slots on a board that fits a standard ATX case.

The ASRock Rack EPYCD8 is a single-socket ATX server motherboard for AMD EPYC 7002 and 7001 series processors. It provides eight DDR4 ECC memory slots, seven PCIe 3.0 slots, eight SATA3 ports, two M.2 slots, two OCuLink ports and dual Intel Gigabit LAN with IPMI. It suits homelabs, storage servers and compute nodes.

Getting EPYC Performance Into a Standard ATX Build

Most EPYC boards use proprietary or E-ATX layouts that only fit server chassis. Homelab users and small businesses who want EPYC core counts often have to buy a complete server or a large case.

The EPYCD8 uses standard 12 x 9.6 inch ATX dimensions, so it fits ordinary towers and many rackmount cases. It still delivers server essentials: eight memory channels with ECC RDIMM/LRDIMM support, seven full-length PCIe slots and BMC remote management.

Expansion and Storage for Dense Builds

Four PCIe 3.0 x16 and three PCIe 3.0 x8 slots support GPUs, HBAs and 10/25/40GbE NICs at the same time. Eight SATA3 ports through two mini-SAS HD connectors, two M.2 slots and two OCuLink ports for U.2 NVMe drives cover both spinning and flash storage.

Server Networking and Remote Management

Dual Intel i350 Gigabit LAN ports provide mature driver support in Linux, VMware and Windows Server. A BMC with a dedicated management LAN port gives IPMI access for remote console, power control and hardware monitoring.

Setup Instructions

How to Set Up the ASRock Rack EPYCD8

  1. Install the EPYC 7002 or 7001 processor in the SP3 socket using the torque sequence on the retention frame, then fit an SP3 cooler.
  2. Install DDR4 ECC RDIMMs or LRDIMMs across all eight channels for full memory bandwidth (do not mix RDIMM and LRDIMM).
  3. Mount the board in an ATX-compatible case, connect the 24-pin ATX and CPU power connectors, and cable SATA, M.2 and OCuLink storage.
  4. Connect the IPMI port, access the BMC web interface, update BIOS for EPYC 7002 support, and install your OS or hypervisor.
