Simplifying Server Networking with Virtual Interfaces

Servers in virtualized and converged environments often need many separate network and storage interfaces. Adding physical NICs and HBAs for each purpose consumes slots, cables and switch ports.

The Cisco UCS VIC 1455 (UCSC-PCIE-C25Q-04) presents up to 256 virtual NICs and HBAs to the operating system over four 10/25G SFP28 ports. Each virtual interface gets its own policies, VLANs and QoS, set centrally in Cisco UCS Manager or Intersight.

This reduces cabling and adapters while supporting Ethernet and FCoE storage traffic on the same converged links.

The UCSC-PCIE-C25Q-04 supports up to 256 virtual NICs/HBAs, FCoE, VXLAN/NVGRE offload, RDMA (RoCEv2) on supported releases and managed by UCS Manager/Intersight. These capabilities reduce CPU overhead and improve consistency for Cisco UCS C-Series virtualization and converged infrastructure.

It connects through a PCI Express 3.0 x16 and is designed for Cisco UCS C-Series rack servers (M5 generation and later supported models). Supported media: SFP28 DAC, AOC or optical transceivers.

How to Install the Cisco UCSC-PCIE-C25Q-04

1. Power down the server, disconnect power, and open the chassis following the server documentation.
2. Install the adapter in a free 3.0 x16 or wider slot and secure the bracket.
3. Connect cables or transceivers (SFP28 DAC, AOC or optical transceivers) to your switch, then power on the server.
4. Install or update the latest drivers and firmware for your operating system or hypervisor, then configure IP addressing, teaming, VLANs or RDMA as needed.
